2013 | Wine | Food | Comics

Theme: 2013 – Now | Our comic-themed event: Wine | Food | Comics!

Featured Wine: Sidekick Sauvignon Blanc

Renowned artist Tim Townsend, a self proclaimed “Marvel Comics artist by day, wine-snob by night,”  hosted our very first comic art wine dinner in 2013. We have hosted this comic themed event every non-pandemic year since!

Taylor Kastl, owner of Tayste Catering, always crafts a menu tailored to the guest artist’s work. The featured wines also give a nod to them too. Consider AIX – En – Provence rose. Doesn’t your mind go straight to Avengers Vs X-Men?! No? Oh, well ours did.

Since 2013 we have had several different artists host and set up at our WINE, FOOD, COMICS events. They include:

Tim Townsend

Janet Lee

Frank Antonio

Andy Smith

Greg Russell

Karla Holland

Celine DeMaesschalck

We are featuring a bottle from Birk O’Halloran, winemaker and fellow comic art enthusiast. Birk has commissioned comic artists like Cliff Chiang and Ming Doyle for his higher tier labels. His most recent release, Old Gods Zinfandel, features art that he saw in Blood of Gods Zine. A bi-annual magazine focused on alternative art and wine.

About Sidekick Sauvignon Blanc

This lineup from Iconic Wines is an introduction (or Sidekick) to the Heroine; a higher-tier Chardonnay.

“The 2020 Sidekick Sauvignon Blanc was sourced entirely from vineyards in Lodi farmed by the Kautz family. These fourth generation farmers have been growing grapes in Lodi since 1920 and were the first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the Mokelumne River sub-AVA of Lodi. Sustainably farmed, these vineyards in the South West portion of Lodi benefit from the strong coastal breezes that flow in from the delta water system to the west. Sandy sedimentary soils and strong bay winds help this Sauvignon Blanc retain good acid and aromatics. To further maintain freshness, a portion of the wine is fermented as reductively as possible. This is done by harvesting at night and doing a small SO2 addition in the vineyard before picking to protect the grapes from oxidation. Free run juice from the press is separated and fermented separately. Fermentation is 14-21 days depending on the lot and all done in stainless steel. The wine is prevented from completing malolactic fermentation to further retain freshness. It is then allowed to settle for six months before final blending and bottling.”- https://www.iconicwine.com/shop/sidekick-sauvignon-blanc-2020
