Featured Wine: Lazaret Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
Domaine Du Vieux Lazaret
Vieux Lazaret translates to ‘Old Lazaret,’ a tribute to the Lazarists (monks) that operated a hospice for poor, ill, and disabled people in the center of the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine was purchased by the Quiot Family in the 1800s and has served many purposes over the years- including silk production and general agriculture- but it was given a renewed purpose in the 1900s when phylloxera resistant vines were replanted.
Domaine Du Vieux Lazaret CdP Blanc is a white blend of four different grapes: Grenache Blanc (45%), Clairette (30%), Bourboulenc (20%) and Rousanne (5%). It is left on the lees for four months before being stored in concrete vats giving it a particular weight while maintaining a floral and fruity character with flavors of peach and lemon.
Only 7% of Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s production is white.
Having vines with an average age of 40 years, The Quiot family is focused on tradition. Situated on 205 acres of land purchased throughout the years, this wine is made from grapes picked only by the most experienced harvesters. Wines are made following the strictest rules of the appellation. Going back 13 generations, Famille Quiot is dedicated to producing quality grapes and wines.
The patriarch of Famille Quiot, Jerome Quiot, passed away unexpectedly in November of 2018 at the age of 67. Described as a “dynamic, passionate man of enormous character,”. The loss of Jerome left a major impact on the wine industry. He was a 10th generation winegrower and responsible for creating a firm for his family’s umbrella of wine brands in 1999. Before his passing, Jerome had been to Assorted Table several times to taste through his portfolio with our staff. In fact, it was the first winemaker visit for Celine when she was an intern back in 2015!
